The best soldiers for the worst days: FOB Shank medevac crews save lives day and night

Nearly every time Heaston, a medevac crew chief serving on Forward Operating Base Shank, climbs into a Black Hawk and fastens his seat belt, he launches knowing someone is in pain- and may be dying.

ISAF helicopter crashes in western Afghanistan

logo_isafTwo International Security Assistance Force service members were injured following a helicopter crash in western Afghanistan today.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.


Two sailors hoisted to safety from sailboat

rcaf_2Two sailors were hoisted from their stricken sailing vessel by the crew of an RCAF Cormorant helicopter early Tuesday morning, July 17th, after they were caught in high winds and heavy seas.

The Heat is On

mil_12As daytime temperatures soar toward 50C in the shade in Afghanistan the heat is on for the engineers who keep the RAFs fleet of support helicopters in the air. The tri-service Joint Aviation Group provides rotary wing support to British and coalition forces. At Camp Bastion in Helmland Province RAF Chinook and Merlin crews operate alongside colleagues from the Army Air Corps and Fleet Air Arm flying Apache, Lynx and Sea King.

Maiden flight for Canada’s CH-147F Chinook helicopter

rcaf_1Canada’s new CH-147F Chinook helicopter made its successful first test flight near Boeing’s facility at Ridley Park, Pennsylvania, on June 24.

“This is an exceptionally proud moment for our program and brings us one step closer to fielding this outstanding operational capability to meet the needs of Canadians at home and abroad,” said Colonel Carl Doyon, the medium- to heavy-lift helicopter project manager.
